The “ulu” are simple but perfect boats, hand carved from a tree trunk by skilled Kuna, with two cotton sails, main and jib, and a fundamental tool, a paddle, used both as a rudder when sailing and as a propellant in no wind.

Keeping the balance inside the narrow canoe is, in itself, a big achievement. We are amazed every time we see a Kuna sailing, sitting in the stern of the “ulu”, holding the mainsail’s sheet in one hand, using the paddle as a rudder with the other, draining out the water from the canoe and, on top of that, fishing at the same time with a nylon line… an impossible mission by the rest of the non-Kuna-mortals!

Ingredients
Diving mask, snorkel and flippers
2 lobsters from San Blas Islands
2 onions, 2 tomatoes, 3 cloves of garlic, 1 red pepper
2 cups of rice, olive oil, salt, black pepper, paprika, parsley and water

Directions
Jump into de water with your diving mask, snorkel and flippers, eager to fish lobsters. If you are not lucky, the Kuna fishermen in the San Blas Islands will get you some, they never fail!

Cut the lobsters’ tail from the head, and boil the cut-in-half heads in a pot for aprox. 8 min. Fry lightly the onions, red pepper, grated tomatoes, garlic and parsley in olive oil. Add the rice and the hot strainned stock (double water per measure of rice) and spice it with paprika, salt and black pepper. Bring it to boil and cook it in medium heat. Add the lobster’ tail in pieces in the last 10 minutes of cooking. Let it stand for 5 minutes, while having a refreshing dip before sitting in the shade of your cockpit to enjoy your meal, the sight of the San Blas Islands around you and the feeling of being the most fortunate guy on planet!

That’s how the Classics shaped our planet long time before our current intellect had even started to stretch itself.

One single Continent, made up of all the lands that we know today, Pangea, from Ancient Greek “entire earth” and one single Ocean, Panthalassa, meaning “all sea”, would surround it, majestic, silent, rather absent, calm, observing this creature, borned perhaps from their deepest same bowels, aware of what the future will bring…

Alfred Wegener’s theory of the “Continental drift”, postulated that all the continents may have been joined together in a supercontinent at one point in the past, before breaking up and drifting to the current locations, where we live now.

In view of this appealing historical past, we were attracted to the idea of going back to the Classics by calling “pantalasa” to our new project, in the hope that its evolution may become as much versatile, enchanting, varied and attractive, as the different pieces of land, where the human beings are united-separately living together.
